Unicorns of Love, after placing first in the LCL 2021 Summer Season in August, participated in the Grand Finals of the LCL 2021 Summer Playoffs, facing CrowCrowd in the best of 5 series, and ended up winning the whole tournament with a close score of 3:2.
Interestingly enough, the winning team also managed to lose to the same opponents earlier in the upper bracket. This is UoL’s fifth LCL title in a row.
Unicorns of Love
Unicorns of Love are a European multigaming esports organization. Founded in Berlin, Germany back in 2013, their roster features teams from multiple esports titles, such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Clash of Clans, PUBG MOBILE, sim racing and eSailing.
The organization started as a LoL team participating in EU LCS back in 2014, when the roster consisted of European players such as Vizicsacsi, Dan, PowerOfEvil, Vardags, and Hylissang.
The team exhibited decent performance, placing second at the IEM Season IX – San Jose Major tournament in December 2014, only losing to US’ Cloud9 0:3 in the finals.
One of the biggest achievements of the LoL’s division was placing second at EU LCS Spring 2017 season, losing 1:3 to G2 Esports in the finals and claiming a prize of $53,575.
Back in May 2019, Unicorns of Love initiated a formation of their Russian-Ukrainian CIS-based League of Legends roster, when the organization acquired one of the LCL slots, which previously belonged to Team Just, a Russian esports team, that took third place at LCL Spring in 2018.
The CIS team earned a spot at Worlds 2020, but ended up upsetting their fans with an unsatisfactory performance.
In June 2021, the organization signed Ukrainian carry player Andrey Yakovlev, better known as Argonavt, who previously played for Dragon Army.
Worlds 2021
Worlds 2021 is waiting for the last three teams to qualify: Chinese LPL fourth place team, the seed from the Brazilian CBLOL, and the winner of the LJL 2021 Summer Playoffs in Japan.
There are ongoing rumors within sports media that Riot Games, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and prior positive experience with the event organization in the country, are organizing the 2021 World Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The American video game developer, headquartered in Los Angeles, California, who have previously failed to organize the tournament in China, due to the numerous coronavirus restrictions, have released an official statement, that the competition will be held in Europe.
The US company has previously used the Laugardalsholl Sport Center for two Major tournaments: 2021 Mid-Season Invitational and VALORANT Champions Tour 2021: Stage 2 Masters – Reykjavik.
