The UEFA Conference League often flies under the radar, with many overlooking its clubs. However, most teams in this competition rarely reach the league phase or group stage of European tournaments, making them fight twice as hard as their more prestigious counterparts. The gap between nations is negligible here—any team can take points or upset a favorite. Here are our predictions for the most intriguing matches of the UEFA Conference League’s opening round, kicking off today.

Lech Poznań vs Rapid Vienna

As Ekstraklasa champions, Lech started in Champions League qualifying, confidently dispatching Iceland’s Breidablik (7:1, 1:0). However, they fell to experienced Crvena Zvezda (1:3, 1:1). In Europa League qualifying, they faced a tough draw against Genk (1:5, 2:1).

In 14 of Lech’s 16 matches this season, both teams scored.

Rapid finished fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga but earned a European spot through a playoff against LASK (1:3, 3:0). They began in the Conference League, overcoming Dečić and Dundee United to reach the group stage.

In 10 of Rapid’s 16 matches, both teams also found the net.

Dynamo Kyiv vs Crystal Palace

Dynamo approach this match in less-than-ideal form. The “White-Blues” have a poor record against English sides in European competitions, with only five wins in 30 matches (16 losses). They face their first Premier League opponent since a crushing 0:8 aggregate defeat to Chelsea in the 2018/19 Europa League Round of 16.

Given recent results and the teams’ respective levels, Dynamo have slim chances of earning points. In four of their last five matches, at least four goals were scored, with six in their most recent game. However, their last ten European matches saw only two exceed two goals.

Noah Yerevan vs Rijeka

Noah have reached the Conference League group stage for the second consecutive year. Their debut last season was underwhelming: four losses, one draw, and one win. Still, qualifying for Europe is a significant achievement for the Armenian side.

Rijeka ended Dinamo Zagreb’s seven-year dominance to win the Croatian title, earning a Champions League qualifying spot. They fell to Ludogorets, then beat Shelbourne in Europa League qualifying before losing to PAOK. This marks Rijeka’s first group stage appearance since 2020.

KuPS vs Drita

For two consecutive seasons, both clubs have competed in Conference League qualifying. As champions of Finland’s Veikkausliiga and Kosovo’s Superliga, respectively, they started in Champions League qualifying but ended up in Europe’s third-tier competition.

KuPS lost just once in four home qualifying matches, falling to Midtjylland (0:2) after playing most of the game with ten men. They won their other three home games with clean sheets (1:0, 2:0, 1:0).

Drita won four of their eight qualifying matches and lost four. Notably, all their victories came against Luxembourg’s Differdange. Six of their eight matches were decided by a single goal.

Aberdeen vs Shakhtar Donetsk

The teams have had polar opposite starts to the season. Aberdeen are struggling across all competitions, with just one win in ten matches—against a Scottish second-tier side—and seven losses. In six league rounds, they’ve earned one point and scored zero goals. In Europe, they were convincingly knocked out of the Europa League by FCSB. Their winless streak spans seven matches, and they’ve failed to score in their last six.

Shakhtar, led by Arda Turan, remain unbeaten in regular time. Over half their matches have been wins, with 11 of 16 ending in clean sheets. Before traveling to Scotland, they won three consecutive matches, all without conceding.

Fiorentina vs Sigma Olomouc

Fiorentina are not in top form heading into the Conference League’s opening round. Under new-old manager Stefano Pioli, the team has struggled to find success in Serie A, with his new ideas yet to yield wins. Even their two-leg victory over Polissya carries little weight. However, the “Viola” may shine in their favorite competition against their next opponent.

Sigma are also struggling. Their European experience pales compared to Fiorentina’s, with their last matches before this season dating back to 2018/19, when they lost to Malmö. Their best hope lies in drawing on domestic performances against top sides like Sparta, Slavia, and Viktoria. Upsets are rare, but Sigma can put up a fight.

Slovan Bratislava vs Strasbourg

Under Vladimir Weiss, Slovan actively use their flanks and show versatility in attack. They’re comfortable with positional control and distribute energy well across lines, helping them lead the Slovak league. In eight rounds, they’ve secured five wins and three draws, scoring 19 goals and conceding 12.

Strasbourg are also effective up front, with enough quality to breach Slovan’s defense. Both teams play openly, prioritizing attacking play. Slovan are prolific domestically and consistently create chances, while the French side boasts strong finishing.
