UEFA Champions League Matchday 1 Predictions Digest

16.09.2025, 03:30

The biggest football show is back! The Champions League returns with its new format, featuring a single, massive league table of 36 teams playing in a Swiss-style system, doing away with the traditional group stage. This midweek, fans will get to see all the contenders in action. We’ve handpicked the most interesting games from a betting perspective.

Juventus vs Borussia Dortmund

15:00Finished16.09.2025

Juventus has started the season confidently, with three consecutive wins, including a thrilling 4-3 victory in the “Derby D’Italia” against Inter last weekend. Before that match, Igor Tudor’s side had a solid defensive record, but Inter managed to break them down. Still, the Bianconeri’s firepower allows them to win even in tough matches. For the upcoming game, the return of Cambiaso is a bonus; he has good memories of the pre-season friendly against Dortmund, where his brace secured a win for Juve in August.

Borussia, on the other hand, had a less convincing start but are gradually building momentum, securing two confident wins in their last two Bundesliga rounds. However, their away record against Italian clubs is not great: just four wins in 20 matches and 14 losses. Furthermore, Juventus has consistently come out on top in their recent competitive meetings.

Oleksandr Vaskov - Sports Data Manager

Considering the hosts’ form, historical advantage, and Borussia’s struggles in away games against Italian teams, the advantage is clearly with the Turin side.

Betting Tip: Juventus Team Total Over 1.5 at odds of 1.94

Athletic Bilbao vs Arsenal

12:45Finished16.09.2025

The Champions League returns to Bilbao for only the third time since 1992. It’s a huge event for Athletic, but they’ll have a very difficult start—they’ll face an experienced Arsenal side, considered one of the tournament favorites. However, the current form of the Basque team suggests they can put up a good fight. Athletic are generally strong at home and very effective in attack.

This season, Arsenal has conceded just one goal—in their away loss to Liverpool. But on the European stage, the Londoners aren’t as defensively sound. The Gunners haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last six away games in European competitions. Still, Arsenal has won four of their last five away matches in Europe and will look to capitalize on their much greater European experience in Bilbao.

Oleksandr Vaskov - Sports Data Manager

Six of Athletic’s last eight European matches, and nine of Arsenal’s last ten, have seen at least three goals scored. Athletic has scored in six of their last seven home games in Europe, scoring at least twice in five of them. While an away victory seems the most likely outcome, my bet is on goals.

Betting Tip: Total Goals Over 2.5 at odds of 2.1

Benfica vs Qarabag

15:00Finished16.09.2025
2BenficaPortugal
3QarabagAzerbaijan

Although Benfica is undefeated this season, they haven’t always looked convincing. Dropped points against Santa Clara after a costly Otamendi error and a hard-fought win over Fenerbahçe showed they have problems—primarily in attack, where their finishing isn’t always sharp. In their last match, they had 19 shots but scored only once. New signings like Lukebakio and Sudakov could solve this issue, but the former is currently injured, and the Ukrainian needs time to adapt to his new club.

Qarabag convincingly navigated the Champions League qualifiers, winning five of six matches, and are ready to fight for a playoff spot. Their run of three consecutive away wins in Europe gives them confidence, although Benfica’s higher level makes their task much harder. Still, the Azerbaijani side’s attacking potential means they can at least score, even if their chances of getting points are slim.

Oleksandr Vaskov - Sports Data Manager

Benfica has not won by more than a one-goal margin in nine of their last 12 matches. Qarabag has not lost by more than one goal in over ten consecutive games.

Betting Tip: Qarabag Asian Handicap (+2) at odds of 1.79

Bayern Munich vs Chelsea

15:00Finished17.09.2025
1ChelseaEngland

Bayern Munich has won all five of their domestic matches this season, securing the German Supercup and taking sole leadership in the league. In every game, they have scored at least two goals, often more. While they’ve had some minor issues on the road, at home, Bayern looks terrifying. Their matches against Leipzig and Hamburg ended in a combined 11-0 victory.

Chelsea remains undefeated in the Premier League and has gone nine matches without a loss, including the Club World Cup. However, they’ve already had two draws in four league rounds, even though they haven’t faced any top-tier teams yet. The team is effective in attack but not flawless defensively—a vulnerability Brentford recently exploited.

Oleksandr Vaskov - Sports Data Manager

This is essentially the first major test of the season for both teams. We anticipate a tight contest. While we favor Bayern, our main bet will be on total shots on target.

Betting Tip: Total Shots Over 25.5 at odds of 1.83

Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid

15:00Finished17.09.2025

Liverpool underwent significant changes in the summer transfer window, spending over 200 million on new players. Expectations for the Reds are high. But Liverpool is still finding its rhythm, and Arne Slot is integrating players into his system. This hasn’t stopped them from winning all their Premier League matches this season, putting their defeat in the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace behind them. Liverpool enters the match against Atlético at Anfield as clear favorites.

Atlético hasn’t spent as much as Liverpool but has also significantly revamped their squad. They’ve had a poor start to the Spanish league season, adding pressure on Diego Simeone. They finally secured their first win in the fourth round, but it came at a cost, with more players picking up injuries, including Julián Álvarez. We expect the Reds have a great chance to justify their bookmaker odds.

Oleksandr Vaskov - Sports Data Manager

Three of Liverpool’s last five games and three of Atlético’s last four have seen both teams score.

Betting Tip: Both Teams to Score – Yes at odds of 1.70
