Gerrard Calls for Tactical Shift After Wolves Defeat
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has publicly urged Arne Slot to bench Cody Gakpo in favor of teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha. The former captain believes the 17-year-old winger provided more impact in a brief substitute appearance against Wolves than the Dutch international managed across the majority of the match.
Ngumoha impressed during his late cameo at Molineux, nearly scoring when his effort was tipped onto the post and later providing an accurate cross that Virgil van Dijk failed to convert. Despite Liverpool suffering a late loss that damages their Champions League ambitions, the youngster’s performance stood out as a rare positive.
Gakpo Under Pressure Following Poor Productivity
Gakpo has struggled for consistent form this term and is yet to reach double figures in goal contributions despite regular starts. Gerrard argued that the lack of speed and quality in the final third necessitates a change for the upcoming FA Cup fixture against Wolves.

The critique extended beyond the forward line. Gerrard described the first half as a complete waste, citing a lack of urgency and penetration. Defensive lapses also drew fire after Liverpool conceded from a basic long ball and a poor clearance from the goalkeeper. The match served as a significant missed opportunity for Arne Slot, whose side remains inconsistent.
While Slot has previously advocated for a patient approach with Ngumoha to protect his development, the immediate need for results might force his hand.
