Somalia’s qualifying campaign has started about as poorly as it could have. A 1-2 defeat to Gambia leaves them bottom of Group C with nothing to show after matchday one, and now Hervé Renard’s Côte d’Ivoire arrive fresh off a routine 2-0 win over Ghana. The gulf between these two sides on paper is enormous, but qualifiers have a habit of producing odd afternoons, and Somalia at least showed some fight in patches of their recent matches even when results didn’t go their way. Honestly, we don’t see much romance here though, just a heavy mismatch waiting to play out.
Keep an eye on Franck Kessié for the visitors. He scored and assisted in Côte d’Ivoire’s last outing and tends to pull strings from deep, which against a Somalia midfield that’s been overrun for most of this year could mean a busy night box to box. On the other side, Bilal Njie is Somalia’s most direct threat up front, having found the net in their 4-2 win over Mauritius earlier this year, and he’ll need a big performance if the hosts are to trouble this Ivorian back line at all.
Hot stat: Côte d’Ivoire doubled Somalia’s shot output in their most recent matches, 12 attempts to just 6, while conceding only two goals across that stretch. Somalia, for context, have failed to keep a clean sheet in four of their last five and sit with a minus-one goal difference in Group C already.

Somalia vs Côte d’Ivoire prediction
There isn’t much of a debate to be had. Côte d’Ivoire have won 8 of their 11 matches this year, a 73% winrate that dwarfs Somalia’s 33%, and the bookmakers barely price the hosts into contention at all. We think the value sits with backing the Elephants to win comfortably rather than chasing long-shot draw odds that just don’t reflect the gap in quality. A -2.5 handicap looks the smarter angle than the straight moneyline given how short Côte d’Ivoire’s win price already is.
Style-wise, this should be one-way traffic. Côte d’Ivoire completed roughly 88% of their passes in their last match against Ghana compared to Somalia’s 79% in their loss to Gambia, and their fouls count (17) versus Somalia’s (13) suggests the visitors do more of the pressing and ball-winning higher up the pitch rather than sitting off. Both sides picked up two yellow cards in their last outing, so discipline-wise it’s fairly even, but Somalia’s defense has been stretched by better opposition all year and Côte d’Ivoire’s front line, even without the biggest names starting, should create plenty.

Team Analysis
Somalia’s form line reads rough for most of the year, though there was a small pocket of respectability before this qualifying window opened, a win and two draws sandwiched among the losses. The 1-2 defeat to Gambia on matchday one was actually competitive for stretches, Somalia even got on the scoresheet, but conceding twice against a side ranked outside the continental elite says plenty about their defensive issues heading into this one. In our preview of Gambia vs Somalia we backed the hosts to win with goals at both ends, and the 2-1 final score delivered exactly that.
Côte d’Ivoire, meanwhile, look sharp. Their 2-0 win over Ghana was routine, controlled possession, limited the opponent to almost nothing, and it continued a pattern where they’ve won 3 of their last 5 games outright. There was a wobble against Norway a few weeks back, a 1-2 loss, but that came against European opposition and shouldn’t be read too much into against a Group C rival like Somalia. Those prices tell the whole story really. A win for Somalia here is priced somewhere near lottery-ticket territory, and honestly the market’s not wrong to view it that way given the form gap. We’d stay away from the draw too, it’s a rare qualifier where the bookmakers seem to agree almost universally on the outcome, and there’s little reason for us to argue against that consensus.

Bilal Njie’s goal threat makes him the one to watch if Somalia are to nick anything here.

The Verdict
We’re backing Côte d’Ivoire to win this comfortably, likely by two or more goals, given the gap in current form, squad quality and recent output. Somalia have conceded in four of their last five and haven’t looked convincing defensively against far weaker opposition than what’s coming to town now. Our lean is Côte d’Ivoire -2.5 on the handicap with Over 2.5 total goals, and we’re not expecting Somalia to find the net given how comfortably the Ivorians shut out Ghana last time out. A repeat of that 2-0 scoreline, or worse for the hosts, feels like the most realistic outcome.
