Graham Potter open to Sweden job after Tomasson sacking

Potter open to Sweden job after national team change

Former Chelsea and West Ham manager Graham Potter says he would consider taking charge of Sweden after the national side dismissed Jon Dahl Tomasson on 14 October 2025. Sweden sit bottom of Group B in 2026 World Cup qualifying with one point from four games.

“I’m actually in Sweden right now, in my house in Sweden,” Potter told Fotbollskanalen. “I’m between jobs and just left the Premier League.

“I’m open to anything, really, where I feel I can help. The job as head coach of the Swedish national team is fantastic.

“I have feelings for Sweden. I love the country and I love Swedish football. I have a lot to be grateful for towards Swedish football.

“So yes, it would be a fantastic opportunity for me, obviously.”

Potter, 50, has deep ties to Swedish football. He managed Östersunds FK from 2011 to 2018, guiding the club from the fourth tier to the top division and lifting the Swedish Cup in 2017.

He later managed Swansea City and Brighton, moved to Stamford Bridge with Chelsea in 2022 and was dismissed after seven months. He left West Ham in September 2025, after eight months in charge.

Tomasson was relieved of his duties following a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on 13 October 2025. That result, combined with earlier games — a draw with Slovenia and losses to Kosovo and Switzerland — has left Sweden with a troubling start to qualifying.

Despite the poor run, the squad still boasts strong attacking options: Alexander Isak of Liverpool and Viktor Gyökeres of Arsenal lead the forward line.

What Potter brings

Potter speaks Swedish, knows the domestic scene and has a track record of building teams from modest beginnings. That background, and his fondness for the country, makes him a natural candidate as Sweden searches for a new coach.

Managerial path

  • Östersunds FK (2011–2018) — promotion and Swedish Cup win
  • Swansea City — Championship experience
  • Brighton — established himself in the Premier League
  • Chelsea — appointed 2022, left after seven months
  • West Ham — departed September 2025

Sweden’s federation will now begin the search for a permanent successor. Potter has made his interest clear and remains a name to watch as discussions progress.
