Phil Foden’s red card against United sets the tone for a lineup stacked with reckless challenges, missed chances and one particularly costly penalty miss. Coventry and Sunderland each contribute three players, a brutal reflection of how their weekends unraveled.
GK: Djordje Petrovic (Bournemouth) – 4.6
A rough afternoon against Brentford undid a promising start to the season for the Bournemouth goalkeeper. Petrovic conceded twice from an xG of just 0.5. He got a full hand to Kevin Schade’s header but couldn’t keep it out, and the second goal was arguably worse, a pass straight to the Brentford striker’s feet. The finish, at least, was lovely.
RB: Lewie Coyle (Hull City) – 6.0
Most of the weekend’s poor performers played on the left side, so the Hull City captain might feel unlucky to be here after a gutsy 2-2 draw at Chelsea kept his side unbeaten. Coyle missed a big first-half chance and got exposed by Cole Palmer in the buildup to Chelsea’s second goal.
CB: Axel Disasi (Crystal Palace) – 5.3
The Crystal Palace new arrival put his side in trouble before halftime with a reckless challenge on Jack Clarke that earned a straight red. Palace fought hard down a man but fell to a late defeat. Disasi is now out of Premier League action for six weeks.
CB: Bobby Thomas (Coventry) – 5.6
A grim day across the board for Coventry, with Thomas one of six Sky Blues starters rated below 6.0. He allowed Malick Yalcouye to escape for Brighton‘s second goal, then conceded the penalty that led to their third.
LB: Reinildo (Sunderland) – 4.8
An added-time penalty conceded by the Sunderland left-back handed Arsenal the winning spot-kick, and his second yellow card spares Chelsea’s Jorrel Hato from this list. Reinildo had kept Bukayo Saka quiet for the previous 90 minutes before that late lapse.
CM: Matt Grimes (Coventry) – 5.8
The Coventry captain was no more responsible than his teammates for the second-half collapse, winning all four duels he contested, yet he still finished as the weekend’s lowest-rated central midfielder.
CM: Enzo Le Fee (Sunderland) – 5.9
Le Fee has a case for feeling wronged here. He played his part in a credible Sunderland effort against Arsenal, creating multiple chances before missing the biggest one of the match. It wasn’t a poor penalty by any measure, more a brilliant save than a bad miss, but the result hinged on it regardless.
LW: Phil Foden (Manchester City) – 5.1
Oddly enough, Foden’s dismissal after 23 minutes may have helped his side. It forced Manchester City into a tighter shape that Manchester United had no answer for. Plenty argue the red card was harsh, but Enzo Maresca agrees it was the correct call.
RW: Emi Buendia (Aston Villa) – 5.9
Buendia gets shifted to the right here despite operating more centrally for Aston Villa in their home defeat to Forest. Like several teammates, he’s struggling for form this season and was pulled just after the hour without creating a single chance, losing most of his eight duels along the way.
CF: Taiwo Awoniyi (Coventry) – 5.0
Moments after Coventry conceded the killer second goal to Brighton, Awoniyi made things worse with a red card for clashing with Maxim De Cuyper. It may have been a harsh sending-off, but Coventry, already goalless through four matches, must now navigate fixtures against Forest, Newcastle and Tottenham without their leading striker.
CF: Brian Brobbey (Sunderland) – 5.4
Brobbey showed fight, targeting Ezri Konsa throughout, and racked up more touches in the opposition box than anyone else at the Stadium of Light. None of them produced a shot though, and despite being a physical handful, the Dutch striker lost eight of his ten duels.
