Genoa Part Ways with Vieira Amidst Struggles

Patrick Vieira has left his position as head coach of Genoa, with the club languishing at the bottom of Serie A.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who took over in November 2024, oversaw a winless league campaign. A brief club statement confirmed Vieira is no longer in charge of the first team.

A source close to Vieira revealed to BBC Sport that he initiated discussions with the club on Friday night, leading to a mutual agreement to part ways.

Vieira’s tenure began with Genoa in 17th place. Last season, he secured eight wins and nine draws from 26 matches, guiding the club to a 13th-place finish and safety.

However, this season has been starkly different. His only victories came in the Coppa Italia, with six defeats in nine league games, including five in the last six matches.

“The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for the dedication and professionalism they have shown throughout their work and wishes them all the best for their future careers,” Genoa’s statement read.

A Legacy of Success

During his playing career, Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal, along with silverware at AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Manchester City. He was a key player in France’s 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 victories.

Vieira retired in 2011 and began his managerial career with New York City in 2016. He returned to Europe with Nice, leading them to seventh in Ligue 1 before being sacked in December 2020.

In 2021, Vieira took over at Crystal Palace, guiding them to the FA Cup semi-finals. He was dismissed in 2023 after a 12-game winless streak, then joined RC Strasbourg following a takeover by BlueCo, the company behind Chelsea. Vieira left Strasbourg by mutual consent in July 2024.
