Norwich arrive at this fixture in miserable shape. Four straight league defeats have dropped them to 18th in the Championship table, and Carrow Road has stopped feeling like a fortress this autumn. Southampton, on the other hand, sit third with ten games played and look like one of the division’s most reliable scoring sides this term.
There’s an interesting wrinkle here too. The last three meetings between these clubs have all gone Southampton’s way on the scoreline, including a 3-0 EFL Cup hammering last season. Philippe Clement needs a response fast, or questions about his position will only grow louder among the Carrow Road faithful.
Watch Jacob Wright for Norwich. He’s been their busiest outlet in midfield, racking up over a hundred passes per match and chipping in with a goal in recent games. For Southampton, James Ward-Prowse remains the man to fear from dead balls, a set-piece threat who can change a game with one strike.
Hot stat: Norwich have shipped 16 goals across their last five matches, including a 5-0 thumping from Manchester City. That’s a defense in real trouble heading into a game against a team averaging over two goals scored per match this season.

Norwich vs Southampton prediction
We predict Southampton to win this one, and honestly it’s not a close call on current form. Norwich have lost four on the bounce and conceded freely in every single one of them, while Southampton have won two of their last three and sit just two points off top spot. The visitors carry a sharper attack and a defense that, while not flawless, concedes far less chaos than Norwich’s does right now.
Norwich’s style under Clement leans on patient build-up, evidenced by a modest 79% pass accuracy figure in their last five matches, below Southampton’s cleaner 87% completion rate. The Saints also commit more fouls and pick up more cards, seven yellows in five games against Norwich’s two, which hints at a side willing to disrupt rhythm physically when things aren’t flowing. That discipline gap could hand Norwich a few dangerous free kicks near the box, though their recent form suggests they rarely capitalize on such chances.

Team Analysis
Norwich’s slide has been painful to watch. Their last outing ended 1-2 against Swansea, a game where they led briefly before collapsing defensively again. Before that came a wild 3-4 loss to Bolton, a 0-5 embarrassment against Manchester City, and another 3-4 defeat to Middlesbrough. The only bright spot in this stretch was a 2-1 win over Birmingham, and that now feels like a distant memory given everything that’s followed. Norwich are scoring, averaging close to two goals a match across this run, but their backline has leaked nearly three per game in return.
Southampton look like a different animal entirely. Their most recent match saw them edge Portsmouth 1-0, a tidy, controlled performance that didn’t need fireworks to get the job done. Before that they fell 1-2 to Wrexham, their only blemish in this five-game sample, sandwiched between wins over Bristol City (4-1) and Swansea (3-1), plus a 1-1 draw with Lincoln. That’s four points from a possible six missed only against tougher opposition, and the underlying numbers, 20 goals scored in nine league games, back up the eye test.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Norwich the favourite
- Moneyline Norwich 2.35 | Southampton 2.65
- Draw 3.73
Bookmakers lean slightly toward Norwich here, purely on home advantage, giving them roughly 40% implied probability against Southampton’s 35%. We think that gap undersells the visitors. Southampton’s form and league position suggest they deserve to be closer to favorites, and at 2.65 their price looks generous given how Norwich have played lately. Perhaps the market is still pricing in Carrow Road’s reputation rather than this season’s reality.
Possible Starting Lineups
Norwich possible starting eleven

- GK: Daniel Grimshaw
- DF: Kellen Fisher, Harry Darling, Darlin Yongwa, Benjamin Chrisene
- MF: Jacob Wright, Samuel Field, Paris Maghoma, Pelle Mattsson, Jack Stacey
- FW: Oscar Schwartau
Clement sticks with the 4-2-3-1 that’s defined his recent squads, leaning on Jacob Wright and Samuel Field to shield a shaky back line. Oscar Schwartau gets the nod up top after contributing two assists in his last three outings, while Pelle Mattsson’s discipline in the middle third offers some balance against Southampton’s quicker attackers. Vladan Kovačević pushes Grimshaw for the gloves, so a change there wouldn’t surprise us.
Southampton possible starting eleven

- GK: Daniel Peretz
- DF: James Bree, Nathan Wood-Gordon, Keven Schlotterbeck, Ryan Manning
- MF: Flynn Downes, Kuryu Matsuki, Finn Azaz, James Ward-Prowse
- FW: Cyle Larin
Tonda Eckert’s side mirrors the same 4-2-3-1 shape, with Flynn Downes and Kuryu Matsuki forming a sturdy double pivot in front of the back four. Finn Azaz and James Ward-Prowse rotate creative duties behind Cyle Larin, who’s taken six shots in his last two appearances alone and looks sharp in front of goal. Keven Schlotterbeck’s passing range from the back, over 150 attempts in two games, gives Southampton a platform to build attacks patiently.

The Verdict
We’re backing Southampton to leave Carrow Road with all three points. Norwich simply haven’t shown the defensive structure needed to stop a side averaging over two goals per game, and four consecutive losses have a way of compounding confidence problems rather than fixing them. Southampton’s double pivot and sharper passing numbers should let them control midfield for long stretches.
Expect goals at both ends though. Norwich have found the net in four of their last five matches, so a clean sheet for the visitors feels unlikely even in a losing effort. To be honest, a 1-2 or 2-3 scoreline wouldn’t shock us at all, and that’s the shape our prediction takes: Southampton to win, both teams to score, and over 2.5 goals in total.
