Osimhen: Afcon 2025 is Our Chance to Shine
Victor Osimhen has declared the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) as Nigeria’s golden opportunity to claim their fourth continental title. The Galatasaray striker, still stinging from last year’s final defeat to Ivory Coast, insists the Super Eagles are ready to turn heartbreak into triumph.
“The penalty is a game of luck,” Osimhen told BBC Sport Africa. “Life moves on, and so must we.” Despite Nigeria’s recent struggles including a World Cup playoff loss to DR Congo Osimhen remains focused on the task ahead. “This Afcon is our chance to win back our fans and fulfill our dream.”
Group Stage Challenges Await
Nigeria kick off their campaign in Group C against Tanzania on Tuesday in Fes, followed by clashes with Tunisia and Uganda. Osimhen, a linchpin for the Super Eagles, acknowledges the squad’s depth, with attackers like Akor Adams, Paul Onuachu, and Cyriel Dessers ready to step up.
“We have so many talented players. If I’m not there, others can deliver. That’s our strength.”
His absence during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was stark Nigeria failed to win any of the five matches he missed. With Eric Chelle at the helm, the team will lean heavily on Osimhen’s leadership and goal-scoring prowess.
Bassey Reflects on Ekong’s Exit
Defender Calvin Bassey admitted the retirement of William Troost-Ekong, Nigeria’s 2023 Afcon MVP, left a void. “He was an incredible leader and friend,” Bassey said. But he’s confident in new captain Wilfred Ndidi, calling him “amazing” for the role.
Bassey also highlighted the chemistry with club teammates Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze, which he hopes will translate to national team success. “We know each other’s strengths. That understanding is key.”
As Nigeria chases their first Afcon title since 2013, Osimhen’s determination and the squad’s unity could be the difference.
