Nagelsmann Backs Gnabry as Bayern Star Faces World Cup Absence
Julian Nagelsmann publicly supported Serge Gnabry on Sunday following the Bayern Munich forward’s adductor injury that threatens his World Cup participation. Bayern confirmed Saturday that Gnabry would miss an “extended period” without specifying a return date.
German media outlets reported Sunday that the injury could sideline Gnabry for two to three months, effectively ruling him out of the World Cup beginning June 11.
“I feel very sorry for Serge. This is particularly bitter news at the end of the season, with so many big and important matches coming up,” Nagelsmann stated to AFP subsidiary SID.
The national team coach, who previously managed Gnabry at Bayern, spoke with the 30-year-old immediately after Saturday’s diagnosis became clear. Nagelsmann conveyed his message of support directly to the player.
“I told him that we in the national team are all behind him. We will all support him in the best way possible so that he can get back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
Gnabry, who previously played for Arsenal, has rediscovered his best form this campaign within Bayern‘s attacking setup featuring Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Diaz. The Bundesliga leaders remain active in three competitions: the Champions League semi-finals, German Cup semi-finals, and a potential Bundesliga title clincher as early as Sunday.
This season, Gnabry recorded eight goals and seven assists across 21 league appearances. His World Cup participation was considered guaranteed if he remained fit, making this injury setback particularly damaging to Germany’s squad depth.
