Maximiliano Araujo has signaled his intention to stay at Sporting CP beyond the summer transfer window, despite reported interest from two of England’s biggest clubs. According to A Bola via Sport Witness, Chelsea and Manchester United are monitoring the 26-year-old Uruguayan wide player as they look to strengthen their left-back options ahead of the 2026/27 season.
With Araujo’s stance now clear, Sporting CP are confident of retaining him for at least one more season. The Primeira Liga club will only entertain offers that approach his release clause of €80 million, a figure that sets a firm ceiling on any potential deal.
Araujo’s Rise at Sporting CP
Araujo joined Sporting CP from Deportivo Toluca in August 2024 and has since established himself as one of the standout performers in the Primeira Liga. Operating on the left flank, the Uruguayan international produced a strong 2025/26 campaign, registering seven goals and six assists across 47 appearances in all competitions — a productive return for a player used primarily as a full-back. That level of output over two seasons has attracted serious attention from clubs well beyond Portugal.
Why Chelsea and United Are in the Market
Chelsea’s need at left-back is direct. The Blues sold Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, leaving Jorrel Hato as the only recognized option in that position within Xabi Alonso’s squad. A replacement is a practical requirement, not a speculative upgrade.
Manchester United face a different but equally pressing situation. Patrick Dorgu has been shifting into a more advanced role, and Luke Shaw remains the sole recognized left-back in the first-team squad. With Shaw past 30, United need a long-term solution at the position, especially as the club prepares to return to the UEFA Champions League.
