Manchester United have opened the season with just four points from four Premier League matches, a run that includes a 1-0 home defeat to 10-man Manchester City on Sunday. Erling Haaland’s winner arrived in controversial circumstances, but the result still piles pressure on Michael Carrick as he begins his first full campaign in permanent charge.
The defeat increased scrutiny on Carrick, who earned the permanent role at Old Trafford after guiding Manchester United to third place and Champions League qualification during a productive interim spell last season. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that the club’s hierarchy has no intention of making a managerial change at this stage, despite the sluggish start to the new campaign.
Romano Confirms Club Backing for Carrick
Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, insisted United’s board remains fully committed to Carrick’s project.
“Man Utd absolutely remain convinced that the future will be bright under Michael Carrick,” Romano said. “Man Utd absolutely know that maybe the point about the summer transfer window was to add one more player, a left-back. They tried. It was not possible to proceed with the right options. United didn’t want to sign just to say: ‘OK, we signed one.’ They wanted to be convinced about the player they were going to sign, and so that’s why nothing happened.”
“But they maintain total faith and confidence in Michael Carrick. They only have four points in four Premier League games, so obviously this is disappointing in terms of results, but Man Utd remain convinced about that.”
Left-Back Search Falls Short
United had targeted the left-back position throughout the summer window, with Newcastle‘s Lewis Hall identified as the club’s preferred option. The move never materialized, and United ultimately chose to enter the season without reinforcing that area of the squad rather than settle for an alternative they weren’t fully convinced by.
Carrick Remains Confident Despite Slow Start
The former United midfielder continues to believe his squad can recover from the early setbacks. Romano suggested Carrick’s public statements mirror what he’s telling the club privately.
“Carrick remains absolutely convinced too. What Carrick says in public – ‘We are going to do very well, I am confident, this team is good’ and all the rest – is what he’s saying to the club.”
“Carrick remains absolutely convinced that this team can do very well in the next weeks and months, especially after the break. So that’s the feeling of Michael Carrick.”
Where Things Stand
Carrick appears safe for now. United’s hierarchy is prepared to give him additional time to fix results and performances rather than react to a single difficult result. The loss to City stings, but it hasn’t shaken INEOS’s confidence in the current setup.
