Manchester United are pursuing 22-year-old Spanish international Alejandro Balde from Barcelona this summer, with direct conversations already held between the player and the club.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, those talks have taken place during the ongoing transfer window. The complication: Balde is happy at Barcelona, leaving any deal uncertain.
Balde’s Path to the Barcelona First Team
Balde is one of several academy graduates who have benefited from Barcelona’s persistent financial difficulties. Those constraints pushed the Blaugrana toward homegrown solutions, producing a generation of players who secured regular minutes under successive managers. Balde’s rise followed a more gradual arc than some teammates, but he eventually locked down the starting left-back spot.
He has made over 150 appearances for the club, contributing three goals and 21 assists — numbers that reflect his value as an attacking full-back rather than a purely defensive operator. Seven senior caps for Spain confirm his standing at international level.
His form dipped in the second half of the 2025/26 season. Defensive consistency and crossing accuracy both fell short of previous standards, drawing attention from within Barcelona’s hierarchy. That drop has done little to cool external interest, with several clubs tracking his situation.
Why the Move Makes Sense for United
Balde has featured on United’s radar for an extended period. The strategic logic is straightforward: Patrick Dorgu has transitioned to a winger role under new manager Michael Carrick, opening a vacancy at left-back. Luke Shaw, now in his early 30s and with a well-documented injury history, cannot be relied upon as the sole option in that position.
Balde offers a credible short-term rotation partner for Shaw and a long-term first-choice solution. United are reported to be prepared to pay a significant fee to get the deal done.
Barcelona’s Position
Some reports have pointed to internal concerns at Barcelona regarding Balde’s form and attitude in recent months. Despite that, a summer exit remains unlikely given the player’s own desire to stay at the club beyond this window. United’s interest is genuine, but Balde’s preference for remaining in Catalonia is the primary obstacle to any agreement.
