Replacing the Brazilian veteran, who ultimately justified his £70m price tag, will be a significant task. Ederson has emerged as a near-perfect candidate at a fraction of that cost.

The Atalanta midfielder, aged 26, delivered a composed season in Serie A, helping his club finish seventh. Atalanta value him at approximately £38.3 million, a fee United are reportedly willing to meet. Crucially, Ederson has agreed terms in principle with Michael Carrick’s side and has paused discussions with other clubs to push through a move to Old Trafford.
Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino addressed the situation after Ederson was left on the bench during their 1-1 draw with Fiorentina on Friday night.

His upper-body strength makes him difficult to dispossess, and his instinct after winning possession is to drive forward and initiate attacking moves.
Comparisons have been drawn to Arsenal‘s Declan Rice, while others see elements of both Casemiro and former United favourite Ander Herrera in his game.
Alternative Options
Nottingham Forest‘s Elliot Anderson is also on United’s shortlist, but Forest are expected to demand over £100m for the England international. With Manchester City also monitoring Anderson closely, any pursuit would be costly and complicated. Ederson, by contrast, represents a more straightforward path to a meaningful midfield upgrade at a price that leaves room for further business.
