Fabrizio Romano has clarified that former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca remains the primary selection to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Despite recent speculation, there are no advanced negotiations between the Italian manager and Tottenham Hotspur.
The North London club underwent a significant leadership change following a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United. This result served as the breaking point for the Spurs board, leading to the dismissal of Thomas Frank on Wednesday. Tottenham has endured a dismal run of form, recording only one victory in their last 11 fixtures and failing to win any of their previous eight Premier League matches.
Igor Tudor Takes Interim Charge
To stabilize the squad for the remainder of the season, Tottenham has secured Igor Tudor as interim head coach. The Croatian tactician has committed to a short-term deal that focuses exclusively on the final months of the current campaign.
“Tottenham have decided to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season, and that manager is Igor Tudor,” Romano stated. “Tudor has signed a five-month contract with no option to extend. The agreement is strictly until the end of the campaign. He understands the situation clearly. Tottenham want a short-term solution before making a permanent appointment in the summer.”
Spurs Narrow Summer Shortlist to Pochettino and De Zerbi
While Tudor manages the immediate crisis, Spurs are looking toward the summer for a long-term appointment. Romano identifies Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi as the two primary candidates on the shortlist. Pochettino is currently occupied with his role leading the USMNT ahead of the World Cup, while De Zerbi is evaluating various European opportunities before committing to a new project.
Enzo Maresca Linked to Etihad Succession
Regarding Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea earlier this season after a fallout with the hierarchy, his future appears tied to Manchester City rather than North London. Since Pep Guardiola is under contract until 2027, the situation remains fluid, but City officials view Maresca as the natural successor should Guardiola depart.
“There have been reports linking Enzo Maresca with Tottenham, but my understanding is different,” Romano added. “Maresca remains the main candidate for Manchester City in the event that Pep Guardiola decides to leave. Pep is under contract until 2027, and nothing has been decided, but City are preparing for the future.”
