South Korean international Kim Min-jae has emerged as a January target for two Premier League sides, with Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur both registering interest in the 29-year-old Bayern Munich centre-back. Both clubs are looking to strengthen their backline in the winter window and view the experienced defender as a potential fit.

Spanish outlet SPORT reports that the two English clubs have made contact regarding a possible move. Both sides are eager to add defensive depth and experience to their squads, and Kim’s profile ticks several boxes for either project.

Kim is not the only club circling the defender. AC Milan have already submitted an enquiry over a January deal, adding a third suitor to the race. Bayern Munich, for their part, are said to be seeking around €40 million to sanction his exit. The Bundesliga giants have reportedly lined up Barcelona defender Jules Kounde as the man to replace him should a deal materialize.

Kim Min-jae’s Bayern Munich Chapter So Far

Kim’s move to Bayern from Napoli in July 2023 arrived with considerable hype following a standout Serie A campaign. His time in Bavaria has been uneven since then, with the defender struggling to lock down a guaranteed starting role.

During the 2025/26 campaign, Kim logged just 2,051 minutes across 37 appearances, contributing one goal and one assist. This season has brought a shift in fortunes: he has missed only two matches, racking up 399 minutes across five outings and adding an assist along the way.

Could a Premier League Switch Be on the Cards?

Aston Villa’s interest in Kim is not new. The club has monitored him for an extended period, and the logic behind a potential move is straightforward. Victor Lindelof and Tyrone Mings are both past 30 and edging toward the latter stages of their careers, while Pau Torres has battled fitness problems over the past year. Kim’s physical profile and top-level experience make him a sensible fit for Villa’s backline needs.

Tottenham’s long-standing interest in the former Napoli man is equally well established. Spurs invested heavily in central defenders during the summer window, though, and adding another one may not be the priority given the club’s sluggish start to the 2026/27 season and other pressing needs across the squad.

Bayern’s €40 million asking price looks steep given Kim’s current standing in the squad and the fact he has entered the final two years of his contract. His €8 million-a-year salary adds another layer of complexity, and it remains unclear whether Villa, Tottenham or Milan are prepared to meet those terms in full. With Milan actively pursuing a deal as well, Bayern will look to drive the fee as high as possible once January arrives.
