Iceland vs France Prediction: 13.10.2025 FIFA World Cup UEFA Qualification

12.10.2025, 09:12

The World Cup qualifiers always offer narratives that straddle the borders between hope and expectation – and the Group D clash at Brann Stadion, Bergen, between Iceland and France is no exception. Iceland come into this with their back to the wall, eager to capitalise on home support after a turbulent run of form. France arrive, as ever, draped in the mantle of favourites and looking to maintain perfection in qualification.

All eyes are on Icelandic forward Albert Gudmundsson, the heart of their attacking ambition, and French talisman Kylian Mbappé, whose flamboyance and precision have been pivotal in France’s campaign. Behind them, defensive marshals Sverrir Ingi Ingason and Dayot Upamecano are poised to lend steel and structure – a classic confrontation of attack versus defence.

France’s offensive machine has been purring of late: in the last five matches, Les Bleus have averaged a remarkable 33 total shots per game – a “hot stat” that defines their imperious momentum and should set Iceland’s defenders on high alert.

Iceland vs France prediction

Given both form and squad quality, France are outright favourites – and the best value appears to be backing France with an Asian Handicap or France to win to nil. Deschamps’ unit have won every qualifier so far, conceding just one goal and orchestrating matches with tactical assurance. Mbappé’s dynamism alongside support from Adrien Rabiot and Hugo Ekitiké, plus the defensive reliability of Upamecano, ensures balance.

Iceland, meanwhile, are in a transitional phase under Arnar Gunnlaugsson. Their 4-4-2 approach suits counter-attacking, but the hosts have conceded heavily when pressed by high-calibre opposition – notably shipping five goals to Ukraine recently. Their physical style is evident from their 11 fouls averaged per match, yet their pass accuracy (averaging 83% in recent games) reflects an attempt at controlled build-up, often undone by errors near their penalty area.

France’s 5-4-1 lineup is built for midfield dominance and calculated ball retention (with a recent pass accuracy just below 90%). Les Bleus keep discipline – only 8 fouls per match and few bookings – and rack up twice as many corners as Iceland. Expect France to control possession, generate more chances, and exploit Iceland’s defensive lapses, but they’ll be wary of the Icelandic set-piece threat.

🔥Hot Tip: France -1.5 Asian Handicap

Team Analysis

Iceland’s recent campaign has been a mixed bag. Their last outing, a frenetic 3-5 defeat to Ukraine, was symptomatic of defensive fragility but did showcase an ability to find the net, with Gudmundsson bagging a brace and Mikael Ellertsson contributing. Previously, they clinched a convincing 5-0 home victory over Azerbaijan, before being narrowly edged 1-2 by France in their last encounter – a match where they showed discipline but were ultimately overwhelmed by superior technical quality.

France, in contrast, are riding a wave of consistency. Their last three performances constitute a 3-0 dispatching of Azerbaijan (showcasing clinical finishing), a 2-1 win over Iceland, and a 2-0 shutout of Ukraine. Mbappé’s capacity to unlock any defence has been evident throughout, while Adrien Rabiot and Theo Hernandez have provided composure and attacking intent from midfield and the backline. Defensive solidity stands out: France have kept three clean sheets in five outings, conceding just three times in that period.

Pre-game odds and win probability: France the favourite

  • Moneyline Iceland avg. 11.50 | France avg. 1.22
  • Draw avg. 6.74
  • Over/Under Over 2.5 1.71 | Under 2.5 2.05
  • BTTS (both teams to score) Yes 2.25 | No 1.60

The bookmakers have it right: with France at 1.20-1.23 across the board and Iceland as high as 12.00, there’s little doubt where the power lies. France’s ruthless attacking form, stifling defensive numbers, and rock-solid mentality firmly justify these odds, while Iceland’s volatility and leaky back line reinforce the underdog status. The only value for punters lies in France handicaps or possibly total corners.

Possible Starting Lineups

Iceland possible starting eleven

  • GK: Elías Rafn Ólafsson
  • DF: Victor Pálsson, Sverrir Ingi Ingason, Daniel Leo Gretarsson, Logi Tomasson
  • MF: Hákon Arnar Haraldsson, Mikael Ellertsson, Hakon Valdimarsson, Mikael Anderson
  • FW: Albert Gudmundsson, Andri Guðjohnsen

Iceland should line up 4-4-2, blending youth with experience to shore up defence and provide pace on the counter. Gudmundsson will be the attacking focal point, with Ingason anchoring at the back. The midfield needs to stay compact to cut off supply lines to Mbappé. Expect Ellertsson as the creative engine in midfield, feeding balls into Gudjohnsen and Gudmundsson.

France possible starting eleven

  • GK: Mike Maignan
  • DF: Jules Koundé, Dayot Upamecano, Theo Hernandez, Malo Gusto, Lucas Hernández
  • MF: Adrien Rabiot, Khephren Thuram, Michael Olise, Hugo Ekitiké
  • FW: Kylian Mbappé

France’s 5-4-1 is designed for offensive flexibility and defensive assurance. Maignan will marshal from the back, flanked by a line of world-class defenders. Olise and Rabiot bring creativity, with Thuram managing transitions. Up front, the threat is all about Mbappé’s pace and power – though Ekitiké’s movement will be important for unlocking Iceland’s deep line. The wing-backs push high to overload Iceland’s flanks.

My take on the Match

It’s hard to look past a France victory here, and I see Les Bleus controlling proceedings from start to finish. Iceland’s spirit is admirable, but their vulnerabilities at the back and inconsistency in the middle of the park are likely to be exploited by a rampant Mbappé and creative French wingers. A betting recommendation would be France -1.5 Asian Handicap or France to win by two or more, with a clean sheet for Maignan. Yet, if Iceland find an early set-piece, things could get spicy – but it would take a heroic turnout to alter the likely trajectory.
