Gregor Kobel has made his stance clear on his future at Borussia Dortmund, signalling genuine interest in extending his stay well beyond his current contract, which runs until 2028. The Swiss goalkeeper’s comments arrive as the Bundesliga runners-up sit top of the table after a perfect start to the season, a run that has included fixtures against sides such as SC Paderborn 07.
“I’m super happy at BVB, I really enjoy playing for this club and in front of these fans. Of course, I can very well imagine playing here for a long time to come,” Kobel told Sport Bild regarding a possible contract extension.
Sport Bild reports that Dortmund’s decision-makers want to open talks on new deals with Kobel, as well as defenders Julian Ryerson and Waldemar Anton, before Christmas. Both of those contracts also expire in 2028. In the best-case scenario for the club, fresh agreements could be announced during the autumn.
Dortmund signed Kobel from VfB Stuttgart in 2021 for a fee of 15 million euros, and he put pen to paper on his current deal in October 2023. The 28-year-old has become one of the absolute mainstays of the squad, despite persistent links to Newcastle United throughout last season.
“Honestly: I don’t concern myself with rumours at all,” Kobel said on the speculation. A departure from Dortmund had been “zero point zero an issue” for him, he stressed.
Kobel Praises Niko Kovac’s Influence on the Squad
Part of the reason the Swiss shot-stopper feels so settled at Borussia stems from his relationship with coach Niko Kovac. “He has brought in a clear structure and culture here that are our foundation for success,” Kobel said of Kovac’s work.
Kovac took charge in February 2025 following the dismissal of Nuri Sahin shortly beforehand. “In a team there are many cultures, different languages. You have to find a basis, a common path. And Niko has quite clearly made sure of that,” Kobel explained.
A Mentor for Dortmund’s Next Generation
Kobel has long operated as a leadership figure at BVB, serving as a point of contact for the club’s younger players. With new signing Konstantinos Karetsas, he has “spoken a lot, for example about how tough a whole season is in several competitions and with the national team. What it means to play every three days. That body and mind have to stay fit and that you must not lose sight of your goal.”
Kobel speaks from experience on managing outside noise. “A lot is written about us BVB players, and recently fortunately very positive things. But even positive headlines must not distract you, you have to stay humble, because the headlines could be very different again tomorrow,” he said.
Kobel’s Numbers and What Comes Next
Across five years in black and yellow, Kobel has made 222 competitive appearances for Dortmund. The Zurich-born keeper also serves as Switzerland’s number one, having featured in three of the national side’s four most recent Nations League matches.
After the extended international break, Kobel and Dortmund return to Bundesliga action on Friday when Werder Bremen visit Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund have taken maximum points from their opening four league matches and currently sit atop the standings heading into the fixture.
