Swedish FA Secures Potter for Long-Term Project
Graham Potter has committed his future to the Sweden national team by signing a contract extension that runs until 2030. The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) confirmed the deal on Thursday, signaling a massive vote of confidence in the 50-year-old tactician.
Potter originally accepted a short-term agreement in October 2025. His history with Swedish football remains a significant factor in his appointment, having previously led Ostersund through a dominant seven-year tenure before moving to the Premier League to manage Chelsea and West Ham United.
“To be able to continue in this role means a lot to me. I feel both a great pride and a great responsibility,” Potter stated. “It’s a big day for me and a fantastic opportunity to do something important going forward. Sweden is a football country with a proud history of teams that have made it to the finals of major championships and competed there, which we want to return to.”
Path to the World Cup
The extension arrives at a critical juncture for the national side. Sweden struggled during the World Cup qualifying group stages under the previous manager, Jon Dahl Tomasson. That decline led to the Dane’s dismissal and opened the door for Potter to stabilize the squad for the upcoming playoffs.
Despite previous setbacks, Sweden remains in contention for a spot in the US, Canada, and Mexico tournament. They travel to Valencia, Spain, to face Ukraine on March 26th. A victory in that fixture sets up a decisive final playoff match against either Poland or Albania in Stockholm on March 31st.
