Gavi has no intention of leaving Barcelona, according to his agent Ivan de la Pena, who has moved to shut down speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future. The 22-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign at Camp Nou, playing just 211 minutes across eight appearances, with only two starts to his name. Reports have suggested a January exit could be on the cards, with Napoli among the clubs credited with interest in the Spain international.
De la Pena has now addressed the rumours head on.
“I have not negotiated with anyone. Gavi is staying,” De la Pena told reporters.
Flick backs Gavi to stay patient
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was asked about the midfielder during his press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Aston Villa.
“We all know his quality and Gavi is always an option, but once the match starts that option might disappear and you can’t always stick to your initial plan. I’ve spoken to him and the important thing is that he has confidence,” Flick told reporters.
Gavi played only the final 20 minutes of the European fixture, with Marc Bernal called upon to replace the injured Rodri at the half-time interval.
The midfielder has represented the Catalan club on 174 occasions, scoring 10 goals and registering 18 assists since breaking into the first team in 2021.
Gavi future: what happens now?
Barcelona return to La Liga action against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, and Gavi will be hoping to earn a place in the starting side. Even with Rodri injured, that outcome appears unlikely, meaning the Spaniard might have to accept another spot on the bench.
Gavi seemingly has no immediate desire to seek pastures new. If his situation does not change and a bench role becomes permanent, he might face a decision when next summer’s transfer window opens. Follow TipsGG for all the latest Barcelona transfer news and updates.
