Early season tables rarely tell the full story, but this one is worth a second look. FC Augsburg sit top of the Bundesliga after two rounds, unbeaten with a plus-six goal difference. Bayer Leverkusen, the side everyone tips for a top-four finish, sit down in seventh with a loss already on the board. Something has to give at the WWK Arena, and honestly, we think the away side’s squad depth eventually wins out even if the scoreline stays close for a while.
There is an interesting wrinkle here too. Augsburg have won four of their last five matches across all competitions, conceding just once in that stretch. Leverkusen have scored plenty (12 goals in five games) but leaked goals just as freely, losing twice in that same span including a shock defeat to Nottingham Forest. Neither team is playing it safe defensively right now.
Two names stand out. Anton Kade has been Augsburg’s spark, with two goals and an assist in only two starts, and his directness could trouble a Leverkusen backline that has looked shaky. On the other side, Patrik Schick keeps finding the net regardless of opponent, three goals in four appearances, and he remains the focal point of everything Leverkusen try to build through the middle.
Hot stat: Augsburg have conceded just one goal in their last five matches while scoring nine, the best defensive return of any side in their recent run, and it is the main reason they currently top the Bundesliga table after two rounds.

FC Augsburg vs Bayer Leverkusen prediction
Bookmakers back Leverkusen at 53% to win, and that number feels fair rather than generous. Augsburg’s hot start has come against Frankfurt, Schalke, Cottbus and Sassuolo, decent tests but not quite the level Leverkusen bring on a weekly basis. Our lean is Leverkusen to win, but not comfortably. Augsburg have scored in every one of their last five matches, and that trend does not look like stopping here.
Style-wise, the two sides differ quite a bit. Leverkusen dominate possession, they completed roughly 89% of their passes across the last five games compared to around 75% for Augsburg, and their fouls total (55) sits noticeably higher than Augsburg’s 32. That suggests Carles Martínez’s men press aggressively and are willing to take cards to stop transitions, something Augsburg’s counter-attacking forwards could exploit with a card or two of their own for the hosts. Corner counts were almost identical (21 vs 20), which points to a fairly even territorial battle even with the passing gap.

Team Analysis
Augsburg’s last five results read like a form book in someone else’s favour: a 3-2 win over Sassuolo, a heavy 0-4 loss to Leeds, then bounce-back wins over Cottbus (2-0), Schalke (3-0) and, most recently, a 4-1 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt. That last one is the headline. Four goals against a mid-table Bundesliga side shows genuine attacking sharpness, not just luck against weaker opposition.
Leverkusen’s recent run has more bumps in it. A 1-2 loss to Nottingham Forest, a narrow 2-1 win over Newcastle, a routine 4-0 win against Wehen, then a worrying 2-3 defeat to Elversberg before steadying with a 4-0 win over Union Berlin last time out. That Elversberg result is the one that should concern Martínez. Conceding three goals to a side that isn’t near their level points to a defense still finding its shape this early in the season.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Bayer Leverkusen the favourite
- Moneyline FC Augsburg 4.00 | Bayer Leverkusen 1.76
- Draw 4.20
The market leans hard toward Leverkusen, and given the squad quality difference, that makes sense to us. Augsburg’s price of 4.00 does look a touch generous considering their perfect start to the league campaign, though. We would not be shocked if some value sits in the draw at 4.20 given how open both defenses have looked recently, but backing the away side remains the statistically sound route.
Possible Starting Lineups
FC Augsburg possible starting eleven
- GK: Finn Gilbert Dahmen
- DF: Noahkai Banks, Marius Wolf, Chrislain Matsima, Hennes Behrens
- MF: Han-Noah Massengo, Yannik Keitel, Fabian Rieder, Robin Fellhauer, Anton Kade
- FW: Michael Gregoritsch
Manuel Baum sticks with the 4-2-3-1 that has produced nine goals in five games. Dahmen has played every minute in goal and looks settled. Kade’s minutes are limited so far, but his goal involvement makes him nearly impossible to leave out of the front three. Gregoritsch leads the line with the experience to hold the ball up while the midfield runners join in.

Bayer Leverkusen possible starting eleven
- GK: Mark Flekken
- DF: Edmond Tapsoba, Miguel Gutiérrez, Loic Bade, Lucas Vázquez
- MF: Aleix García, Ignacio Fernández Carballo, Ibrahim Maza, Malik Tillman, Afonso Moreira
- FW: Patrik Schick
Also a 4-2-3-1 for Martínez, mirroring Augsburg’s setup. Flekken has started every match in goal, Tapsoba and García have both played full minutes across the recent run and anchor the side. Maza’s two goals and two assists in four games make him the creative focus, and Schick’s finishing up top remains the one constant Leverkusen can rely on regardless of form dips elsewhere.

TipsGG Match Prediction
We think Leverkusen edge this one, but not by much. Augsburg’s early-season defensive record is legit, one goal conceded in five matches is not a fluke, and their home crowd at the WWK Arena adds an extra push. Leverkusen’s recent wobble against Elversberg shows their backline is not bulletproof either.
Our call: Bayer Leverkusen to win, both teams to score, and the total goals to creep past 2.5. Schick or Maza to get on the scoresheet feels like the smarter individual angle if you want something with a bit more juice than the straight moneyline.
