Veteran Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko has committed to another season with Schalke, signing a one-year contract extension after playing a direct role in the club’s promotion back to the Bundesliga. The German club confirmed the deal on Monday.
The 40-year-old joined Schalke on a free transfer in January and wasted no time making an impact, scoring six goals in 11 Bundesliga 2 appearances to help the side end three years in the second tier. He also captained Bosnia and Herzegovina at the recent World Cup.
“Winning promotion to the Bundesliga ranks among the highlights of my career. It was unbelievable,” Dzeko said in a statement. “Football has made me happy and driven me throughout my life. I am still hungry, and I want to help our team in the Bundesliga too.”
If Schalke’s Bundesliga opener on August 30th goes ahead as scheduled, Dzeko could line up against Augsburg for his first top-flight German appearance since leaving Wolfsburg for Manchester City back in 2011. His career since then has taken him through Roma, Inter Milan, and Fenerbahce before landing at Schalke.
