Djibril Cisse Urges Steven Gerrard to Return to Management

Djibril Cisse wants Steven Gerrard back on a touchline, and he isn’t shy about saying why.

The Frenchman spent three seasons at Liverpool, sharing a dressing room with Gerrard during the club’s unforgettable Champions League triumph in Istanbul in 2005, when the Reds overturned a three-goal deficit against AC Milan.

Cisse moved into football media after retiring, mixing punditry work with DJ sets. Gerrard chose a different path, building a coaching career that took him through spells at Rangers, Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia before his exit from the Gulf club last year.

Gerrard has since stepped away from the dugout, working as a pundit for TNT Sports and The Overlap. Speaking to Mr Gamble, Cisse made clear he expected his former teammate to already be back in charge of a club.

“Honestly, I believed it should have been Steven Gerrard’s moment when Arne Slot left Liverpool. I thought that’s how it would happen.”

Cisse didn’t stop there, pushing the case for Gerrard to take a job at either Burnley or Wrexham, two clubs that have been floated as possible destinations.

“Steven Gerrard back in a job (with Burnley or Wrexham)? I’d love that, for two reasons. He’s a friend, someone I like and respect a lot, and he loves football. He needs to be on the pitch, in contact with players.”

“I hope he finds a project that suits him because he misses it. As a player he already had a coach’s mind. He had a successful spell in Scotland, then went to the Middle East. He has a lot of football knowledge and experience to pass on to young players.”

“We need people like him on the bench, whether in the Premier League, in France or anywhere else, former players who know the game and can share their knowledge with the young ones.”

Gerrard’s name has circled Wrexham amid speculation over Phil Parkinson’s future at the club. For now, he remains on the sidelines, a stance that will frustrate supporters hoping to see him back on the training ground soon.
