Liverpool are eyeing Tottenham Hotspur right-back Djed Spence as a priority defensive target this summer, with reports confirming the England international is extremely receptive to making the move to Anfield.
The Reds have been quiet in this transfer window, completing only two signings so far in Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet. Their primary focus has been attacking reinforcements, with Paris Saint-Germain wingers Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye both on the radar. Defensive depth, though, has become an pressing concern. Liverpool are currently without Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni, and Joe Gomez, leaving them short across the backline with particular weakness at full-back.
Spence enters this window in a strong position. He was among Tottenham’s more consistent performers last season and earned international recognition with England at the World Cup. With Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson expected to be Tottenham’s preferred full-back options going forward, Spurs appear willing to sanction his departure at the right price.
Anfield Sector reported on X that Liverpool hold a genuine interest in Spence and that the player himself is open to the switch:
“Liverpool have an interest in Tottenham defender Djed Spence. Spence is said to be extremely receptive to the idea of a move to Liverpool. Andoni Iraola has defensive concerns around the current right-backs. Not the only name under consideration so no clarity whether progresses but definite interest even if downplayed.”
On the financial side, Tottenham reporter @szyexcl indicated Spurs would require a minimum of £35m to move Spence on:
“Understand liverpool hold an interest in djed spence. player would be very open to liverpool if an offer arises. #thfc would seek at least £35M”
Former Premier League scout Bryan King put an even steeper floor on the valuation last month, arguing Tottenham would be making a mistake selling at anything below £50m.
“I think he’s done well every time he’s played for England. They’d be foolish to let him go for £25m, that is for sure. You wouldn’t let him go for £25m. You wouldn’t even start thinking about letting him go for under £50m. We’re talking about a young, current England international. It’s a situation where Tottenham would be stupid to let him go.”
The gap between Tottenham’s reported asking price and King’s assessment leaves room for negotiation, but Liverpool’s defensive situation adds urgency to their pursuit.
