Clarence Seedorf returns to the dugout after a seven-year absence from club and international management, with Brazilian giants Corinthians confirming the 50-year-old as their new head coach on Sunday.
The former Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan midfielder last held a managerial post with Cameroon, a spell that ended in his dismissal in July 2019. His move to Sao Paulo marks a return to club football after years away from a dugout.
Seedorf has signed a contract running through the end of the 2027 season, the club confirmed in an official statement. The length of the deal points to long-term planning at a side currently battling to avoid the drop.
Corinthians sit just a single point above the relegation zone in Brazilian Serie A. The club parted ways with previous manager Fernando Diniz on Wednesday, acting fast to install Seedorf ahead of a demanding stretch of fixtures.
A Coaching Resume Built at Elite Clubs
Seedorf’s first head coaching role arrived at Milan in January 2014. He terminated his playing contract with Botafogo to retire and step straight into management. He inherited a Milan side sitting 11th in the table and lifted them to an eighth-place finish before his exit in June that year.
His career since has taken him to Shenzhen in China and Deportivo La Coruna in Spain, stops that kept him connected to top-level coaching despite the gap since his last managerial post with Cameroon.
Straight Into a Derby Test
Corinthians travel to face second-placed Palmeiras later on Sunday, handing Seedorf an immediate introduction to one of Brazilian football’s fiercest rivalries. There is no settling-in period here. A fixture of this magnitude against a direct title contender will test his new squad’s response within days of his arrival.
Corinthians’ form heading into the match remains a concern given their position near the bottom of the table. Seedorf’s long-term deal suggests the club views this appointment as a rebuild rather than a quick fix, but results against sides like Palmeiras will shape the mood around his tenure from the opening weeks.
