Sutton’s Predictions vs. The Wellermen’s Jonny Stewart
Arsenal may be top of the Premier League at Christmas, but it’s Chris Sutton who’s leading the way in predictions. The former Blackburn and Norwich striker, who knows a thing or two about Christmas league positions, is relishing his current form.
“I’m number one at Christmas – again,” said Sutton. “It’s a big deal for me to be top, as well as for Arsenal. AI is the go-to for virtually everyone in the world whenever they have to ask anything, so the fact that I am beating it – and let’s face it, I have stuffed it for half a season now – is pretty incredible. It says a lot about me, and I’m delighted. Rather than asking AI about everything, maybe people should come to me to tap into my intelligence instead?”
Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League games this season, pitting his wits against AI, BBC Sport readers, and a variety of guests. For week 18, his challenger is Jonny Stewart, bass singer with sea shanty folk group The Wellermen and a lifelong Newcastle United fan.
The Wellermen shot to fame with their viral sea shanty covers, amassing billions of views on TikTok. But for Jonny, nothing beats the high of seeing his team lift a trophy.
“We were on tour in Colorado when Newcastle won the Carabao Cup,” he recalled. “I connected with the Mile High Magpies, the Denver supporters’ club, and watched the game with over 100 fans. When Dan Burn scored that header, I cried so hard. Being away from home made it even more special.”

Sutton’s prediction: 0-1. “Newcastle have the better squad, and Eddie Howe’s side will edge this.”
Jonny’s prediction: 1-2. “Manchester United blow hot and cold, but I’m going with my heart.”

Sutton’s prediction: 0-2. “City are on a roll, and I can’t see past them.”
Jonny’s prediction: 0-3. “City are hitting form at the right time, and Cherki is imposing his will on games.”
AI’s prediction: 1-3.
Arsenal vs. Brighton
Sutton’s prediction: 2-0. “Arsenal have had their wobble, and they should win this.”
Jonny’s prediction: 2-1. “Arsenal have too much for Brighton, even with Welbeck leading their attack.”

Brentford vs. Bournemouth
Sutton’s prediction: 2-2. “This game has goals in it, and I see a draw.”
Jonny’s prediction: 2-0. “Brentford’s home form is strong, and I don’t see Bournemouth winning.”

Sutton’s prediction: 1-1. “This will be close, and Everton might have to settle for a point.”

Sutton’s prediction: 2-0. “Liverpool will have too much for Wolves.”
Jonny’s prediction: 3-0. “Liverpool’s squad is too strong, and Wolves are struggling.”

Sutton’s prediction: 1-2. “Fulham will have something to celebrate.”
