Chelsea have reportedly joined a group of Premier League clubs monitoring Jules Kounde’s situation at Barcelona, with the Catalan club open to offers for a defender who has fallen well down the pecking order this season. The timing is notable given Barca’s historic start to the 2026/27 campaign, eight wins from eight games in all competitions, a record that eluded even the Johan Cruyff, Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique eras.
Flick Finds Plenty to Smile About
Hansi Flick’s side looks nothing like the team that was dismantled 8-2 by Bayern Munich during the pandemic years. Lamine Yamal has grown into a central figure for the squad, and Raphinha has worn the captain’s armband with genuine authority.
The Brazilian’s redeployment as a makeshift centre-forward, following Ferran Torres’ departure and the club’s decision to let Robert Lewandowski leave, has become one of the season’s unexpected triumphs. Barca’s failed pursuit of Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid made that improvisation necessary, and it has paid off handsomely.
Kounde’s Playing Time Collapses
Jules Kounde represents the clear exception to Barca’s otherwise smooth season. The Frenchman has completed just one full LaLiga match this term, against Rayo Vallecano, with a second full outing coming in the Champions League versus Feyenoord.
He logged only 10 minutes across the first two league fixtures of the campaign and has been stuck on the bench without appearing in the last three. A player once considered automatic at either right-back or centre-back now struggles to command a starting spot in either role.
Reports from Spain indicate Chelsea are among the Premier League sides testing the waters on a potential deal, and Barcelona appear receptive to moving on their out-of-favour international.
Kounde Admits the Struggle
“It is a decision by my coach. I feel very good physically. I don’t have any injury. If I have less playing time, it is due to being well below my usual standards. It is a consequence and a challenge that I accept gladly. I will have to work, which is what I normally do. It is up to me to recover my best feelings. I know that when I am in my best condition, I will have playing time.”
The Numbers Behind the Decline
Since the start of last season, Kounde has made 52 appearances for Barcelona but started only 41 of them, getting substituted off in seven. His passing numbers remain solid: only three players have exceeded his 3,248 passes in that span, and his 91.87% accuracy ranks among the highest in the squad.
The final ball is where things break down. Once reliable when advancing from right-back, Kounde has found teammates with just 18 crosses since the start of 2025/26, with 39 more going astray.
Defensive Metrics Tell a Mixed Story
A Barca full-back reaching the byline is expected to deliver quality service, and those figures fall short of that standard. Alejandro Balde has faced similar issues on the opposite flank, losing his spot to the right-footed Joao Cancelo at left-back.
Kounde has won 50 of 78 attempted tackles, a 64.1% success rate, and added 106 clearances, both respectable returns. He has been beaten for pace repeatedly down the right channel, and shares the joint-most errors leading directly to an opposition goal.
- 38 occasions where attackers retained the ball under his pressure, the third-worst mark on the team behind only Fermin Lopez and Pedri
- Seven yellow cards since the start of 2025/26, joint third-worst in the squad
- 379 duels attempted, the fourth most on the team, winning 206
He has done enough to get by most weeks without truly convincing. Flashes of quality have been followed by stretches of mediocrity, a pattern that falls short of what Barcelona demand from a defender of his pedigree.
A Move Worth Weighing Carefully
Barcelona’s willingness to field offers speaks for itself. Chelsea and any other suitor would do well to study these numbers closely before committing to a player who still has plenty to prove at this level.
