Celtic's Nancy: New Signings Must Bring Personality and Quality

26.12.2025, 09:16

Nancy Emphasizes Character in Celtic’s Recruitment Drive

Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy has outlined the qualities he seeks in potential new signings, stressing that personality is just as crucial as technical ability. With the January transfer window approaching, Nancy is keen to reinforce his squad after a challenging start at Parkhead.

The former Columbus Crew head coach believes that any incoming players must be equipped to handle the pressures of representing Celtic. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match against Livingston, Nancy highlighted the importance of resilience and attitude in his recruitment strategy.

We have a lot of ability in terms of the way we play. It is important that when you sign players, they need to have personality. This is a big club. To play here is not always easy. It is so, so important to have players who can play here at a club like this.

Nancy pointed to Kieran Tierney and captain Callum McGregor as prime examples of the type of player he aims to build around. While Tierney leads by example on the pitch, McGregor combines his performances with vocal leadership—a balance Nancy values deeply.

Everybody knows Kieran. I knew him before I came here. He’s an important player for us. There are different kinds of personalities. Kieran is not a vocal leader but shows on the pitch. Callum also shows on the pitch but he’s a vocal leader too. We have other players like this.

For Nancy, personality extends beyond mere vocal presence. It’s about maintaining the right attitude under pressure—whether that means relentless pressing, defensive resilience, or supporting teammates in tough moments.

When I talk about personalities, it’s not only to be vocal, it’s to have the right attitude when it is difficult. This means when we attack, can we keep showing ourselves for each other, can we still press, or can we defend like crazy in the moment? It’s more about the attitude for me. This is what I am looking for.
