Liverpool completed the most expensive transfer of the summer window by signing Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday in a deal worth around £123 million ($166 million).
The club secured its primary summer target after a months-long pursuit of the 23-year-old France international, who arrives having won back-to-back Champions League titles with PSG, largely in an impact substitute role behind Désiré Doué.
Barcola now steps into a high-profile Liverpool attack alongside striker Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, both signed last summer for £125 million ($170 million) and £116 million ($156 million), respectively. The winger operates primarily on the left, making him a different profile to Mohamed Salah, who spent nine years on the right at Anfield before departing for Trabzonspor.
The transfer structure breaks down to a guaranteed £106 million ($143 million) with up to £17 million ($23 million) in add-ons. Barcola originally joined PSG from Lyon in 2023 for €45 million ($38.5 million), making this a substantial profit for the Parisian club. The sale sets a record fee for any player departing the French league.
He arrives at a moment of need. Liverpool have made a sluggish start to the Premier League season, requiring late goals to salvage draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest in the opening two rounds. Cody Gakpo and summer signing Víctor Munoz have covered the left flank so far, with Gakpo reportedly attracting interest from Manchester City in the closing days of the window.
Liverpool will also compete in the Champions League this season, adding further weight to the need for depth and quality across the attack.
Among the summer’s other major English transfers, Morgan Rogers moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea for $156 million, Elliot Anderson signed for Manchester City from Nottingham Forest for $155 million, and Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham from Newcastle for $133 million. Barcola’s deal surpasses them all.
For PSG, the financial return is significant, but the sporting cost is visible. The club drew its opening two Ligue 1 matches and struggled to unsettle opposition defenses without Barcola’s explosive pace and ability to stretch backlines. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Doué remain on the flanks, and the club reinforced its attack with the arrivals of Maghnes Akliouche, Ferran Torres, and Mika Godts to cover the loss of depth.
