Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has publicly confirmed the club will sanction the departure of Joao Palhinha this summer, with Aston Villa keeping close tabs on the Portugal international’s situation.
Palhinha joined Bayern with considerable expectations following his big-money move from Fulham, but he has failed to cement a regular role under Vincent Kompany. His limited involvement has made a summer exit the likely outcome.
Freund addressed the situation directly, confirming Bayern are open to offloading the midfielder before the window shuts. He stated that Palhinha is fully aware of where he stands, and that conversations around a transfer are already in motion. Despite his peripheral role, Bayern believe the 29-year-old still commands meaningful resale value.
“They’re training with us, but they won’t play an important role here. I know they’re aware of that,” Freund said to Abendzeitung.
“They’re both good players. They’ll continue to train and play here for now, but the plan is for them to take the next step somewhere else.”
Aston Villa Push to Land Palhinha
Freund’s comments will sharpen Villa’s interest. The Birmingham club has been linked with the former Sporting CP man in recent weeks as they seek midfield reinforcements ahead of another demanding season under Unai Emery. Palhinha’s experience, physicality and defensive output fit the profile Villa are targeting.
Reports indicate Villa have been assessing the conditions of a potential deal. Bayern’s preference is a permanent transfer rather than a loan arrangement, with the club focused on cutting wages and reducing squad numbers through outright sales. Other clubs have registered interest, but Bayern’s position is clear.
For Villa, Palhinha’s Premier League track record is a genuine draw. At Fulham, he ranked among England’s most effective ball-winners, earning recognition for his tackling, positioning and leadership across the pitch. His defensive profile aligns well with Emery’s system, and Villa are expected to table a formal offer.
Bayern have set a price of €25 million, considered fair market value for a player of his calibre and experience at this level.
