Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is set for a significant spell on the sidelines after the LaLiga champions confirmed the 29-year-old returned from the World Cup with torn knee ligaments.
De Jong played through the tournament with a heavily bandaged knee. The Netherlands were eliminated in the round of 32, losing to Morocco on penalties.
“The injury was more serious than initially determined. Thankfully, at this stage there is no need for surgery, and I am now fully focused on my recovery,” De Jong posted on Instagram on Thursday.
Barcelona open their bid for a third straight LaLiga title away at Elche on August 23, and De Jong’s absence will be a major concern heading into the new campaign. Follow TipsGG for the latest updates on his recovery and Barcelona’s season ahead.
