Arsenal are weighing a January move for Atletico Madrid winger Alex Baena as Mikel Arteta searches for extra attacking depth. The Gunners tracked the Spain international before his switch to the Metropolitano, and his form across the past six months has pulled them back into the race. Bukayo Saka’s latest injury adds urgency to the pursuit of a versatile wide option for the Premier League champions.
Arsenal consider January swoop for Alex Baena
Arsenal are targeting a potential January transfer for Baena, according to FootballTransfers, with sources in Spain indicating the Gunners have revived their interest in the Atletico Madrid star.
The north Londoners considered signing the Spaniard back in 2024, when he was viewed as an alternative to Saka on the right flank, before he joined Atletico from Villarreal.
After winning the World Cup with Spain, the 25-year-old has started the season well, registering five goals and three assists across all competitions, including a contribution against Manchester United in the Champions League.
Baena’s versatility stands out. Primarily a winger, he can operate in attacking midfield, central midfield and even as a centre-forward, giving Arteta extra flexibility across the frontline.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta knows Atletico well after spending 12 years at the LaLiga club, a factor that could help if the Gunners pursue a deal.
Atletico won’t make this easy. Baena’s estimated value sits around £40m, but Arsenal could face a higher asking price in January given his importance to Simeone’s side.
Bukayo Saka injury exposes Arsenal’s winger shortage
Saka’s injury against Bayern Munich in midweek underlined why Arsenal need another natural wide attacker.
Arteta admitted the early signs were worrying after the England international suffered a quadriceps injury just ten minutes into the 2-2 Champions League draw. Saka went down with nobody near him and was forced off.
Noni Madueke moved to the right after Saka’s exit, while Eberechi Eze came off the bench and scored from the left. Both delivered, but Arsenal’s options would thin out quickly if Saka faces a long absence.
Eze has spent more time on the left recently, and Madueke is the only other senior winger available. Summer signing Christos Tzolis is out with a hamstring injury, which leaves 16-year-old Max Dowman as another possible option for Arteta.
Baena fits the gap well. Comfortable on either flank and capable centrally, he would offer cover beyond a short-term fix for Saka’s absence.
A January deal won’t come cheap or easy, but Arsenal’s injury list strengthens the case for another versatile attacker. If Baena sustains his current form, he could slot straight into Arteta’s title-chasing squad.
