Women’s Singles: Sabalenka Chasing the Three-Peat

Aryna Sabalenka enters as the No. 1 seed and the favorite to win her third consecutive US Open title. She opens against Camila Osorio, and the biggest threat in her quarter is No. 6 seed Linda Nosková, who already has a major singles title to her name after winning the 2026 Wimbledon Championships. That potential fourth-round matchup could be a serious test. Diana Shnaider (No. 15) and Ekaterina Alexandrova (No. 18) round out the dangerous names in Sabalenka’s section.

Jessica Pegula, seeded No. 3, sits in the same half as Sabalenka, meaning they could meet in the semifinals. Pegula’s quarter features No. 7 seed Karolina Muchova, who just won the mixed doubles title with Jakub Mensik. Elina Svitolina (No. 9) and Emma Navarro (No. 26) add further complications.

The bottom half of the women’s draw is maybe even more interesting. Coco Gauff (No. 4 seed) arrives on a hot streak after beating Pegula to win the Cincinnati Open. She’ll need to get past 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva (No. 5 seed) if seeds hold to make the semis. Iga Świątek defeated Elena Rybakina to win the Canadian Open earlier this month, and the draw has them potentially meeting again in the quarterfinals. Rybakina is the No. 2 seed. We honestly think the Świątek–Rybakina quarter might produce the match of the tournament.

A projected semifinal between Gauff and Rybakina would be a blockbuster, and Gauff could then face Pegula in a potential final rematch.

On the women’s side, Sabalenka’s three-peat bid is the marquee narrative, but Gauff’s form coming off the Cincinnati Open title might make her the most dangerous player in the draw right now. If she and Andreeva meet in the quarters, that’s a generational matchup between two players aged 22 and 19 who could dominate this tournament for years. Świątek having to potentially beat Rybakina again just to reach the semis feels cruel given how strong both players have looked this summer.
